We had booked a ferry for 10.45 am from Townsville to Magnetic Island, so we had to make our way from Airlie Beach to Townsville early in the morning. Actually we wanted to take the ferry by leaving the car in townsville, but we’ve read that the busservice on magnetic island is really bad, so we booked a ferry for the car as well.
Magnetic island is a really small island 8km away from Townsville and there are only a few asphalted streets. After arriving there, we immediately went to the Koala Sanctuary in Bungalow Bay, where we were able to do the tour straight away.
We loved the tour, because you’re able to meet all the typical australian animals. After meeting a turtle, a black tailed kakadu, a wombat (which is one of the funniest animals i’ve ever seen), crocodiles and pythons we were finally able to hold a koala. You have to give the koala its natural environment, that’s why you need to “be a tree”.
After that happy afternoon with all the amazing animals we went to our backpackers, where we got a shock when we saw our room. It looked amazing from the outside, but from the inside it wasn’t half as amazing and there was no flyscreen at all – and to be honest, i don’t wanna look into the hairy face of an australian spider in de morning. But the view from the room was stunning!
On the next day we went snorkling and we got badly disappointed. There is no beautiful reef, no fish, nothing we found worth watching, so we just chilled at the beach until the moment when our ferry back to Townsville was going. Arriving there we made our way directly to cairns where we’ll have 3 full days of adventures now.
